Commonly Forgotten but Critical Candle Making Supplies

by Lillian Morgan

If you have been making candles and want to take the hobby to a commercial level, you need the necessary supplies. Usually, the most apparent supplies include moulds of varying shapes, fragrance oils, dyes, a double boiler, wax, and wicks. However, people looking to make money from their candle-making hobby often forget some supplies. Some of the inputs seem useless at first until you realise their importance in the candle-making process. This post highlights some of the supplies.

Scale

A scale is probably the most ignored candle-making equipment by hobbyists, although it plays a crucial role in the process. Notably, you can get away with inconsistent candles if you make them for personal use. However, consistency is paramount if you make candles for sale. Some of your candles will smell stronger or weaker than others without consistent ingredient ratios. You also risk producing candles whose shades differ significantly despite using the same dye colour. A weighing scale allows you to accurately measure your ingredients every time you make a new batch, ensuring consistency in all candles. You also avoid wasting ingredients by using a weight scale, allowing you to save money.

Warning Labels

While warning labels are not used in making candles per se, they are still an essential part of the supplies. The reason is that candles burn to illuminate space; hence, there should be guidelines on safety. The best way to do it is through warning labels applied to candle containers. For instance, most warning labels advise users to light candles away from flammable objects. Other labels instruct users to keep candles away from children and pets. Such warnings are critical since they protect you from legal liability should customers misuse your candles and injure themselves or damage property. Besides warnings, you can use labels for burning instructions. For example, you can instruct clients when to stop burning candles to prevent accidents.

Double Boilers

Often, most people know that double boiling is the best method to melt the candle wax. However, most improvise by using a small saucepan inside a bigger one. While the DIY double boiling method works for a few pieces of candles, you need a dedicated double boiler for commercial candle making. Notably, you will be making many candles, and you need a dedicated double boiler for the purpose. Besides, since you will be using fragrances and dyes, a dedicated double boiler eliminates the need to use kitchen utensils.
